NY Times: A Mysterious Plot Prompts a Rare Call From Russia to the Pentagon

A strange article in NYTimes about the Russian Defense Minister calling the US Defense Secretary about a potential Ukraine operation.

The operation was not named. Nor is it clear why the Russians should call the Americans about Ukrainian operations. Why not call Kyiv?

The give-away seems to be in the penultimate paragraph:

“But the fact that senior Russian military leaders were even having the discussions alarmed the Biden administration because it showed how frustrated they were about their failures in Ukraine and suggested that Mr. Putin’s veiled threats to use nuclear weapons might not just be words.”

 “Suggested…might not just be words”

The journalist seems to be doing a bit of editorializing about Russia without referring to any sources. Nowhere in the article does anyone except the journalist suggest the call was about Russia using nuclear weapons.
