Country first in Ukraine

Leadership from President Zelensky and President Poroshenko

There has been a lot of talk on social media about elections in Ukraine.

The American Ukraine PAC is firm in its belief that American diplomats should not be dictating changes in leadership to our allies. Ukraine has free and fair elections and a Constitutional procedure for elections. The Ukraine Constitution is clear that elections are not to be held during time of war.

Petro Poroshenko was President of Ukraine from 2014 to 2019. If elections were held tomorrow in Ukraine, Mr Poroshenko would be the main challenger to President Zelensky.

Speaking in Paris, Mr Poroshenko was firm in his support of President Zelensky and the impossibility of elections until the war ends. As quoted by the Kyiv Post:

“Do you know what the elections in Ukraine mean now? Destroying unity. Because elections are always a struggle. And there can be no unity during elections. Every democracy knows that,” he said

“Who would be the winner of this election? That is one person – Putin. He already has a well-thought-out disinformation campaign. He has a fifth column. And he will not take a step back now. If there are elections during the war, he will simply seize the moment. That is unacceptable,” emphasized Poroshenko.

“We must win the war. We must cease fire. And the elections must fulfill the general criteria of democracy and freedom. I am against holding the elections now,” the politician elaborated.

Following on that, CNN reported President Zelensky said “If (it guarantees) peace for Ukraine, if you really need me to resign, I am ready. I can exchange it for NATO.”

I was always taught that when George III heard that George Washington planned to resign his military commission after the American Revolutionary War, the King said “If he does that, he will be the greatest man in the world.”

Thank you President Zelensky and President Poroshenko for following in Washington’s footsteps and putting country first.
